The phrase that makes such a resonant title for this ADD TV show has several themes crossing in the background. The original phrase comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet ("The time is out of joint; O cursed spite!/That ever I was born to set it right!" [I.V.211-2]). Then it has become a title of a book by P.K. Dick, classic sci-fi book in which the principal character Ragle Gumm believes that he lives in the year 1959 in a quiet American suburb. His unusual occupation consists of repeatedly winning the cash prize in a local newspaper competition, "Where will the little green man be next?" Gumm eventually learns that the idyllic neighborhood he lives in is a construct designed to protect him from the terrible fact that he lives on a then-future Earth (c. 1998) that is embroiled in a colonial war of independence with the Moon. Amazingly, Gumm is the only consistently accurate method for predicting where nuclear strikes will be aimed at, and his newspaper puzzle solving skills have saved untold thousands of lives over the years through enabling antimissile deflection. Time out of joint is also a fitting description of editing methods in time-based media. Question of time accompanies cinema and later video since the very beginning. Manipulation with video footage, film strip or material media of sound such as tape are all methods of manipulating time axis. In film editing is a means of constructing a fictional linear time of narration of small fragments of "real" times of single takes. Film in fact is a remix, as DJ Spooky says and quotes a story of how the "cut" was discovered by Georges Méliés by an accident in 1896 when a simple jamming of the cammera caused the film to look like it is a transformation of an omnibus into a funeral hearse and back again. "...a simple opening and closing of the lens had placed the viewer in several places and times simultaneously." (DJ Spooky, Rhythm Science, 2004). Realisation what happens with the time itself in the media has lead to a number of experiments in both film and video. In this edition of ADD TV you won't see any of the classical ones, since this is a DIY production and we cannot afford to pay royalties.
This edition of ADD TV is composed entirely of films and videos dealing with time manipulations such as compressions and expansions downloaded at http://archive.org. All authors of these materials have published them with copyright enabling free performance and distribution under certain conditions. What can you look forward to? Stand-up physicist talking about time in quantum mechanics, remix video "We Edit Life" by Vicki Benett of People Like Us project, lecture on the "Amen Break", cornerstone of the breakbeat music, some footage of clouds and sunsets, educational film on scientific film techniques, SM version of Britney Spears, blow-up dummy and who knows what else...
